Looking Back at 2013: Reinventing the Classroom
Sprout continues to look back at a wonderful year of projects and people that make Pittsburgh such a special place to live, focusing on remaking learning in area schools.
Our 2013 projects didn’t just touch on art and community, but learning and education as well. Over the course of the year, Sprout funded 57 learning innovation projects across the city with seven taking place in schools. It’s part of Sprout’s mission to Remake Learning in Pittsburgh through initiatives like Spark, Hive and most recently, the Remake Learning Digital Corps.
Since 2009, Sprout has catalyzed innovative learning projects in schools, museums, libraries, afterschool programs, community centers, and online through Spark for young children and Hive for teens. In 2013, this important work expanded as Sprout helped catalyze several new learning programs in schools throughout the Pittsburgh region.
“Support from The Sprout Fund provided my students with unique opportunities to share and showcase their work with a much larger audience,” explained Kris Hupp, Cornell High School’s 21st Century Learning Coach. At Cornell, the “This Day in Pittsburgh History” project has students collaborate with museums and archives to research Pittsburgh history and produce a total of 180 documentaries–one for each day of the school year. But Sprout’s learning projects didn’t stop there.
Students are building a full-size energy-producing windmill at Eastern Westmoreland Career and Tech. Propel Braddock Hills High School challenges students to be the teachers in travelling “pop-up classrooms”. Elementary students in South Fayette are studying sustainability by building their own food systems. High school students in Avonworth are learning from mentors at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Mattress Factory and others about how to design, curate and manage a gallery. And at Elizabeth Forward Middle School, youth design and build their own inventions in the DREAM Factory.
By supporting hands-on, interest-driven learning that resonates with the tech-savvy youth of today, Sprout is working to remake learning and inspire a new generation of lifelong learners ready to thrive in the future.
