Sprout announces new funding opportunity for Social Practice artists
Seeking artists to showcase Pittsburgh’s vibrant community of social practice artists at Open Engagement, a national conference coming to Pittsburgh in April 2015
Open Engagement is an international conference and platform to support socially engaged art. The 2015 conference will occur at Carnegie Mellon University, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and other locations in Pittsburgh on April 17–19, 2015.
In collaboration with Open Engagement 2015 and the Office of Public Art, The Sprout Fund is pleased to request proposals from Pittsburgh artists to showcase our thriving local social practice art scene to visiting global and national artists that will attend the conference. Selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium from Sprout in acknowledgement of their participation.
Sprout is requesting proposals from individual artists and collaborative groups to create engaging activities on Friday, April 17 between 10am – 4pm for conference participants that demonstrate Pittsburgh’s unique approach to social practice art in the public realm. Suggested methods include: pop-up installations, site visits to existing projects, performances, and other events that can be scheduled as part of Open Engagement’s opening day activities.
Artists are responsible for securing their own location for activities and providing their own materials and supplies. Conference attendees will likely use public transportation to attend these events, so locations that are accessible and central are very desirable. Selected artists will work with the conference staff to finalize an exact schedule for their activities.
The deadline for applications is Monday, January 12, 2015 by 11:59pm.
