What would you do for your community with a thousand dollars? Would you beautify abandoned buildings with Andy Warhol paintings? Would you host an independent comic expo? Would you create a bumper sticker campaign to support public transit? Those are just a few of the projects that we have funded over the years with our $1,000 grants.

Now it’s your turn to do a lot with just a little. We’ve got an entire round of $1,000 grants to award for the fall, so apply with your Grand Idea by Friday, November 7. We are looking for organizations and individuals who will use this opportunity to create projects that raise awareness about innovative new community projects, events, and activities; engage people in taking an active role in the civic life of their community; and provide opportunities for motivated community members to assume leadership roles.

Projects that we’ve funded with $1,000 grants in the past include:

Using art to improve blighted areas, the Pittsburgh Beautification Project saw dozens of hand-painted versions of Andy Warhol’s iconic Flowers go up in the windows and doors of abandoned buildings across the city. The project received media coverage from all over the United States for its mission to improve urban decay.

Support Pittsburgh Public TransitSupport Mass Transit Bumper Sticker Campaign

With just a thousand dollars, artists and advocates launched a campaign to grow support for public transit with bumper stickers that you can still see around town today, more than a decade later, proudly stating “My Other Car is a Port Authority Bus”. The fight to keep routes active is just as alive today as well.
